THE MANAGER’S MINDSET: FROM ME TO WE

How to manage people and contribute through others

Manager’s Mindset Course

Course Description

Most people are promoted to a management position because they are brilliant at doing technical work (being a scientist, designer, engineer, lawyer etc) and deserve a promotion. This new role is like a cross-functional move as managing people requires a whole new set of very different skills - but don’t panic, management skills, just like technical skills, can be learned by managers who are respected and get great results through a motivated team.

The first place to start is with the manager’s mindset - up to this point, they have been an individual contributor. Now they need to deliver through their people - and it is the sum of all their individual contributions that creates progress towards the organisation’s goals. The mindset shifts from me to we.

What topics are covered?

Our courses are tailored to your needs by selecting from a list of tools, each of which is an individual topic and takes about an hour. Each tool generally covers one key management skill, behaviour or attribute, is accompanied by a toolcard (which builds up to create a personalised toolkit) and uses our Tell-Show-Do experiential learning methodology.

Manager's Mindset Toolkit

You can select from the list of tools below to create learning that is just right for your needs or get in touch with one of our trainers to help design and curate the right programme for your team.

What an effective manager does and doesn't do

1. What an effective manager does and doesn’t do

What a manager does and doesn’t do can have a positive or negative effect on team members.

We explore and bust common myths in a light-hearted way - who’d have thought that rolling up your sleeves to help out could really annoy people!

Contributing through others

2. Contributing through others

This tool is about making the mental shift from: “I achieve results on my own” to “I achieve results with and through my team - their success is my success”.

We cover how to stop doing and start delegating & empowering and being flexible by not insisting on them doing things your way.

Being credible

3. Being credible to build trust

This module focuses on developing your:

Authority (what & who you know, experience & achievements),

Presence (relating well to others) and

Impact (making a difference).

Building trust by being reliable

4. Being reliable to build trust

Being reliable means keeping your promises and doing what you say.

We use the ‘Say & Do Matrix’ to identify what a manager needs to think, feel and do to be truly reliable.

Taking accountability

5. Taking Accountability

This tool helps you understand what accountability is, the benefits of accountability and how to be more accountable.

6. Setting clear, meaningful, SMART goals

How to set goals that focus on the difference people make rather than just the stuff they do.

Motivating teams

7. Motivating Teams

Learn the difference between extrinsic & intrinsic motivators and how to use these to increase your work motivation and that of your teams.

8. Brilliant Basics to help you delegate effectively

Delegate effectively by setting clear expectations and goals, and following up to ensure that tasks are completed to a high standard. You will understand how to use 1:1s and personal development reviews to make the most of your team’s capability and generate a self-sufficient team in whom you have confidence.

How long is the course?

It depends on how many tools you select from the list above! Each tool takes about an hour, with extra time for an introduction, any breaks that are needed and a wrap-up. Choose one tool or add them together - three tools make up half a day, and five or six tools make a full day.

What can you expect?

Interactive, thought-provoking training that can be virtual, face-to-face or a hybrid of the two. We use a variety of methods to create learning that sticks: from videos to activities and exercises in groups or individually, to e-learning, to further reading.
