Setting Direction Course

Course Description

There is no such thing as an organisation, just a group of people roughly pointed in the right direction! And if those people know where they’re headed, you stand a chance of getting there.

This course will equip you with the tools to help your team establish a focused yet flexible Purpose, agree the set of positive behaviours or Way of working, and be clear on the Impact you want to make.  Everyone wants to make a difference, here’s how you can have everyone lined up in the same direction and all making a positive contribution.

Once the future direction is set, you can get more specific, after all a plan is a dream until it’s put into action. Setting SMART objectives and Meaningful Goals that flow down the hierarchy and link across departments will ensure each and every one of your team is clear on what they need to do today, tomorrow and next month to contribute and make a difference.

Sharing expectations between you, your team, peers and line manager will set you up well, and prevent friction. Lastly, the Habit Stack will help you enact personal change.

What topics are covered?

Our courses are tailored to your needs by selecting from a list of tools, each of which is an individual topic and takes about an hour. Each tool generally covers one key management skill, behaviour or attribute, is accompanied by a toolcard (which builds up to create a personalised toolkit) and uses our Tell-Show-Do experiential learning methodology.

Setting Direction Programme Toolkit

You can select from the list of tools below to create learning that is just right for your needs or get in touch with one of our trainers to help design and curate the right programme for your team.

Your custom Setting Direction Toolkit:

Choose from:

Setting Direction - Purpose

1. Purpose

What change that you are trying to bring about; what is your reason for being? Learn how to gather the whole team’s thoughts using various creative media. No artistic skills necessary, in fact, it’s better if you can’t draw!

Setting Direction - Way (Positive Behaviours)

2. Way

This tool helps your team define the simple behaviours at the heart of their way of working – the positive behaviours they will adopt to deliver impact.

Setting Direction - Impact

3. Impact

This module focuses on developing your team’s impact - how you will make the world and people’s lives better. This is simple, not easy. And can make a massive difference to momentum.

The tool employs a future interviewing technique that is both challenging and fun!

Setting Direction - Team Charter

4. Team Charter

Being reliable means keeping your promises and doing what you say.

We use the ‘Say & Do Matrix’ to identify what a manager needs to think, feel and do to be truly reliable.

Setting Direction - SMART Objectives

5. SMART Objectives

This tool helps you set objectives that are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed). Participants will be able to write SMART objectives that helps people focus on what’s important and what needs to be done. Not rocket science, but essential for getting things done well.

Setting Direction - Setting Meaningful Goals

6. Setting Clear, Meaningful, Goals

Behavioural and task objectives connect individual contribution to our purpose, way and impact. This tool shows you how to set clear, collaborative and aligned goals that focus on the difference people make rather than just the stuff they do.

Setting Direction - Sharing Expectations

7. Sharing Expectations

Learn how to understand one another’s expectations using the role expectations tool. This will help clarify mutual expectations and prevent the pitfalls of making assumptions and having unrealistic expectations of others and ourselves.

Setting Direction - Habit Stacking

8. Habit Stacking

Learn how to stack new habits alongside old ones so that you generate personal change and actually do what you want to!

How long is the course?

It depends on how many tools you selected from the list above! Each tool takes about an hour, with extra time for an introduction, any breaks that are needed and a wrap-up. Choose one tool or add them together - three tool make up half a day, and five or six tool make a full day.

What can you expect?

Interactive, thought-provoking training that can be virtual, face-to-face or a hybrid of the two. We use a variety of methods to create learning that sticks: from videos to activities and exercises in groups or individually, to e-learning, to further reading.
