Influencing without Authority Course

Course Description

Organisations need to be agile, with people who think for themselves and make decisions using their own skills and expertise. They contribute more. And in this situation, influence without authority is paramount - you lead through inspiration not position.

Influence without authority is powerful and can forge positive working relationships for life and build a deeper sense of community and belonging, therefore engagement and retention of staff.

This course covers the WHAT, WHO, WHY and HOW to influence without authority.

  • WHAT is within your sphere of influence, which is probably more than you think

  • WHO is your internal and external customer? Who are the people you need to influence?

  • WHY would they be interested? What’s their motivation?

  • HOW to influence them: have a known, shared vision and goal; understand yourself and others – what makes people tick; ask powerful questions and actively listen; find common ground; and reach agreement on what actions each person will take.

What topics are covered?

Our courses are tailored to your needs by selecting from a list of tools, each of which is an individual topic and takes about an hour. Each tool generally covers one key management skill, behaviour or attribute, is accompanied by a toolcard (which builds up to create a personalised toolkit) and uses our Tell-Show-Do experiential learning methodology.

Influence with Authority Toolkit

You can select from the list of tools below to create learning that is just right for your needs or get in touch with one of our trainers to help design and curate the right programme for your team.

The Circles of Influence

1. Circles of Influence

Knowing WHAT you can influence means that you focus your efforts where you will make a difference. This tool helps you simply and quickly determine which of the elements of a situation you have influence or control over.

Customer Mapping

2. Customer Mapping

This tool helps you explore WHO your customers are by mapping them relative to one another and determining their level of contribution. You can then set about increasing the contribution delivered to your end customer by simplifying the map or reducing friction on the journey that solutions make through the map to the end customer.

Benefit Ladder

3. Benefit Ladder

WHY would they interested - your customers' needs and motivations drive the experience, product and service that you offer. This tool helps you develop a ladder of motivation from rational to emotional benefits. If you communicate at the emotional level, chances are your communication will get noticed and be remembered. Involves a fun activity with a potato (no potatoes were harmed in the making of this toolcard!)

Goal of Influencing

4. Goal of Influencing

This tool shows you HOW to influence without authority by finding and expanding the overlap we have with other people. It leverages what people value to encourage reciprocity and win-wins.

Reaching Agreement

5. Reaching Agreement

The second part of HOW to influence without authority, these seven tips help you reach agreement with others and take action as a result.

Asking Powerful Questions

6. Asking Powerful Questions

Being able to ask powerful questions helps you understand someone’s perspective so that you can find overlap between your objective and theirs and be able to influence them. This tool shows you what is powerful and what is not!

7. Active Listening

Two ears, one mouth for a reason! This tool helps you understand the 5 Levels of Listening and you experience the game-changing power of empathetic listening during a fun activity.

How long is the course?

It depends on how many tools you selected from the list above! Each tool takes about an hour, with extra time for an introduction, any breaks that are needed and a wrap-up. Choose one tool or add them together - three tool make up half a day, and five or six tool make a full day.

What can you expect?

Interactive, thought-provoking training that can be virtual, face-to-face or a hybrid of the two. We use a variety of methods to create learning that sticks: from videos to activities and exercises in groups or individually, to e-learning, to further reading.
