Big data is a term that describes the large volume of data – both structured and unstructured – that inundates a business on a day-to-day basis. The challenge is how to analyse this data for insights that lead to better decisions and strategic business moves.
Big Data is a complex and fast moving area. The MoD wanted to identify the issues and opportunities of Big Data and understand how they might apply any future investment, by matching those in command with experts in this field to learn what it is and what it could do for the MoD.
With 86 delegates drawn from academia, all commands, and a wide cross section of industry players, we conducted a study day. In the morning experts shared their knowledge of Big Data, with briefings from the MoD, academia and industry with all delegates gathering key insights – this was all about understanding the Big Data Landscape.
The delegates then identified key themes and dig sites for the MoD, brainstormed key opportunities, any barriers, and prioritised the initiatives that would make the most difference for MoD given the articulated challenges, delivering real clarity to all.
After the event, Treehouse authored the Big Data Summary booklet, providing a distillation of the briefings, a synthesis of the work conducted by the delegates on the day, a diagnostic tool for forces to assess their Big Data needs and details for what to do next and where to go for assistance.
The day was hailed as a transformation in both how to engage multiple stakeholders in a wide ranging and complex topic and also how to present output in a compelling and engaging way. In particular, the Big Data Summary booklet was praised for being novel, interesting, digestible and of direct use to all forces, allowing them to understand in layman’s terms what Big Data is and what they can do about it. Subsequently the work has directly informed the ISS team’s strategy on Big Data.
